Instructor Gradebook Options

To access the grades from inside a course, click on the Grades button in the Administration block.
Using the Gradebook
The gradebook is laid out with assignments across the top and students down the left side. Scores appear in the gradebook as students work on assignments. A score with an asterisk (*) indicates that the student has not completed all questions (where "completed" means "gotten correct or given up").
- Click any score to see that student's performance on that activity.
- Click the name of an activity to see class-wide statistics for that activity.
- Click the name of a student to see contact information for that student.
Suggested use: Click through to a student's attempts on a homework assignment in office hours to review that student's work with the student.
Depending on the size of your monitor and your course, some assignments may be off the right side of your gradebook. To scroll right, use the scrollbar at the bottom of the gradebook.
Categories
Your grades may be grouped into one or more categories (for example, many gradebooks have an "Ungraded" category). Each category name is followed by one of three symbols:
to collapse the category, displaying only the summary score for that category.
to expand the category, displaying all scores within that category.
to expand the category further, displaying all scores within that category plus the summary score for that category.
For most purposes, you can collapse your gradebook (cycling through to the
button) to view only the summary grade for each category, while expanding the overall category for your entire course (the category that shares a name with your course). The far-right column of your gradebook will contain the total for each student for the entire course, while the bottom row shows the overall average for each category or activity.
However, you can also view any individual student's responses to every question in an assignment by expanding the category (
button) and clicking on any individual score.
Editing Scores
Any score can be edited. Click "Turn editing on" at the top-right corner of the gradebook, and enter the new score in place of the old score. When you have finished editing scores, click "Update" at the bottom-middle of the gradebook.
Suggested use: Give a student partial credit for working through misconceptions at office hours.
Grade to Pass
To set a "grade to pass" for any assignment or category, click "Turn editing on" at the top-right corner of the gradebook. Click the
icon for that assignment or category in the "Controls" row of the gradebook. In the screen that launches, set the "Grade to pass" (you may have to click "Show Advanced" to have this feature). When you are finished, click "Save changes."
The "grade to pass" does not have an effect on the overall grade logged in the gradebook. However, after you "Turn editing off" at the top-right corner of the gradebook, grades will be color-coded, with grades at or above your required score shown in green, and grades below your required score shown in red.
Suggested use: Scan an assignment's scores to see which students are struggling with that concept.
