Company History
Sapling Learning grew out of Science Technologies, a successful educational multimedia company that has produced state-of-the-art educational materials for college-level science and mathematics instruction for over a decade. Science Technologies integrates textbooks with multimedia that includes online tutorials, graphics, interactive animations, scientific simulations, digital video/audio, online assessments, and more to create interactive digital content for the most complex subject areas. These include: biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, anthropology, psychology, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, medicine, physics, mathematics, and the earth and environmental sciences. Comprised of a rare blend of professional educators, scientists, instructional technology experts, and media developers, Science Technologies specializes in significantly aiding the teaching of science while simultaneously enhancing student’s learning and retention of the subject matter.
Assessing the outcomes of instruction by monitoring student progress is essential to the learning cycle. In science and mathematics, measuring a student’s ability to demonstrate practical application of knowledge can only be achieved by mimic what he or she would see on an exam or use in the workplace. To satisfy this requirement, Science Technologies developed rich interactive components to test and grade the student’s ability to produce graphs, draw or interact with molecules, sketch free body (vector) diagrams, and create math and chemical equations.
However, the isolation of the course-ware and student performance data from the grade book and other instructor tools missed critical opportunities for instructors to monitor their students and assist in the learning process. In 2005, Sapling Systems was created by the founders of Science Technologies to develop software to meet instructor requirements for educational content development, student assessment tracking, and online instruction. In 2007, both companies were combined under the Sapling Systems name. In 2008, Sapling Systems began combining its software products with newly developed best-of-class content for use directly by students and instructors, and changed its name to Sapling Learning.
